I just walked out of the comic shop yesterday with a hefty stack– many of those nuDCU books. My current favorite of the bunch is Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s BATMAN so far. To think that I’ve never really collected more than 2 DC books for an extended period of time before, this is pretty impressive. I’ve also never read such a mainstream list of books before. Yesterday’s stack had Flash, Batman, Justice League, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Thor, Captain America, and several other comic book icons, as well as several other creator-owned titles that I adore. More on that soon.
On with the sketches!

We. Had. An. EPIC. Show. New York was great to us, and we couldn’t have ended the convention season better. Thanks to all the fans and friends that swung by, bought us drinks, hung out after-hours, or, y’know…
… Invited us to a live taping of Saturday Night Live as a special guest! Anna Faris was hosting, and we had a wonderful time. Even got a backstage pass afterward and saw a bit of how the magic is made every week. Thanks, Scott!

A one-day show in the town that helped raise me from age 5-18, a 9-10 hour drive from where I live? Sure, I’ll be there.
Swing by and say hi! I’ll have SKYWARD on hand, original art from several issues of it, prints, doing con sketches, as well as displaying some art from some other projects I’m doing… OooooOOoo! Mystery!
That said, SKRATCHADAY will be taking a break over the weekend while I’m out of town– it’ll be back Monday with all your favorite sketches, skratches, and general tomfoolery.

Reading that phonebook-sized hardcover is both a chore and a pleasure. While tough to handle for too long physically, I’m enjoying reading through some of these Stan Lee/Jack Kirby FF’s for the first time… and some of the quirkier aspects are delightful.
Really, the quirkiness is infectious. For instance, has Namor ever used his ability to mimic the abilities of every sea creature since that one time? He totally went electric eel on Thing! I did not know he could do that, sir. Also, Namor appears like 4 or 5 times in the first 14 issues! Doctor Doom was the other mainstay, showing up a handful of times himself. I had no idea they tossed aside the bathtub-looking Fantasticar after only ONE ISSUE, as well. So interesting!

I’ve been toying around a lot on how I prefer to draw Spider-Man lately– most notably, the eyes/lenses. Big or small, sharp or bubbly– each has its advantages and disadvantages. Still working through it, but I gotta say– I do like how this one turned out…
Which do you prefer? It’s a debate I haven’t heard much in several years. Thought I’d toss that out there.

Here’s a piece I did for a fan at Dragon*Con. It was in a sketchbook labeled “Spider-Man’s Friends”, and as gorgeous as some of the pieces were, I’m disappointed no one else had gone the route of the cartoon trio. You’re just lucky I didn’t add Ms. Lion!
Originally set at 11 x 17 inches, which is typical comic page dimensions, I’ve edited it a bit to give it the contrast I’ve been itching to see it in ever since I handed it over. If I ever get the chance, I’ll do more! Those buildings demand some tone! Spidey needed his negative space! And I needed the closure. Enjoy!
