You have no idea– the Rocketeer was one of my all-time favorite anythings of anything ever when I was a kid. I wouldn’t have known about it at all, had my father not run a comic shop when I was younger. Then one day I saw a dude with a goofy gold helmet and a rocket pack strapped to his back on the cover with some lady with a weird haircut on it. I was hooked.
I lost track of Dave Stevens’ work in the late 90s, and it wasn’t until I hit college (and the internet was really hooking its teeth on my generation) did I catch back up when I saw his website. Still a good girl artist, it appeared most of his work was in film or commission work. I was devastated. I had hoped there was like 50 issues of Rocketeer I’d missed or something.
Dave’s death a few years back was devastating to all of us who adored his work, and I was really sad about it, as he’s one of those heroes of mine artistically that I’d never had a chance to meet (Kirby, Eisner, Wally Wood, Toth…). I’m just glad someone has picked up the torch to get us more Rocketeer books and collections. I’m there every step of the way.
