BUY my new series SKYWARD #1 today!
I’ll be at Fan-Expo Canada in Toronto this weekend– I THINK I have enough stuff scanned to keep the blog updating daily through the trip, so no down time!

I went through several drafts of the LEGION OF SUPERHEROES piece I posted a couple days ago, and this is the one I ALMOST did. In the end, I wanted a closer shot of Timberwolf and Colossal Boy, but I started with five or six other pieces– this one my runner-up favorite.

Back from Baltimore Comicon, and we leave for Fan-Expo TOMORROW. Clearly, this is insane.
Nevertheless, I’ll be at Fan-Expo Canada in Toronto this weekend– I THINK I have enough stuff scanned to keep the blog updating daily through the trip, so no down time!

I’ve been fascinated by the LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES ever since I was a kid, but beyond picking up a few issues here and there whenever a new creative team interested me, I didn’t get really into it until Jim Shooter and Francis Manapul’s run on the series a few years back. Good friend Sanford Greene also did some fill-in issues during that storyline as well. The redesigns were fresh and interesting, Manapul was clearly on the rise as an artist to watch (and I’m glad I started there– his FLASH run has been stellar)., and the plots were great looks into interpersonal relationships and politics (the former of the two I study at great length). I couldn’t get enough!
THEN THEY CANCELLED THE LEGION RUN MID-STORYLINE to facilitate another relaunch of the concept, this time with Paul Levitz. I’ll be honest: I dropped the book like a rock and haven’t been back since.
Can I also note a personal pet peeve of mine? I hate HATE hate when an artist draws a group of teenagers like they’re 30-somethings. Let’s just say that’s been the case with a couple of the illustrators on the book since Manapul was on it. Not cool, DC.
Anyway, here’s Colossal Boy and Timberwolf from the LEGION! Enjoy.

Baroness, Stormshadow, and Firefly

Dragon and Mr. Glum from Savage Dragon

'Hero' owned by David Hammond

White Witch from the Legion
Here’s another four commissions– the Cobra one I’m fairly pleased with, definitely. I always enjoy illustrating the Cobra-aligned characters in the G.I. Joe universe, and this commission was a breath of fresh air in that it wasn’t just another ninja piece. Always fun!
I won’t lie– Savage Dragon is one of my favorite comics currently being published. Erik Larsen’s work on that book is inspiring to see unfold, and so far this year he’s put out 15 issues! Crazy. I’d love to do a creator-owned book at Image one of these days… here’s hoping! That’d be very cool.
Hero is a creator-owned character I was requested to render. I had a heck of a time working out how to draw his helmet, but in the end it turned out pretty strong, I think. Fun fun.
White Witch is from the LEGION books DC Comics puts out, and the reference I found for her online was fascinating– I’d never seen that before! The eye tendril thing is kinda creepy in some ways. I’ve been playing catch-up on all matters Legion, I’m afraid– although it’s one of the top requests I get for convention sketches and commissions, I never really investigated the series myself until fairly recently. The Jim Shooter/ Francis Manapul run was simply GORGEOUS, and I really wanted to see where it was headed. Too bad it got cut out behind the scenes towards the end of their run. :/
Enjoy!
