You should see my work space (and I haven’t forgotten about posting some studio pics– they’re on the way!)– it’s a mess right now. Scrap pages of SKYWARD page thumbnails, bluelined under-sketches, sequentials, stacks of things to scan… it’s a mess. Now, I’m not a messy person nor am I a neat freak. I subscribe to what my wife calls “organized chaos”. It’s not as bad as it sounds. We both know where things are, they’re in organized stacks, but there’s a small level of disarray to the untrained eye. I clean the studio after every issue I finish as sort of a reward for a job well done, so it’s been a couple weeks since the last time I did so (when I finished an issue of something else). Just thought I’d share.
Hey, I gotta fill the blog space with SOMEthing, right?

I get on a kick from time to time just DRAWING for drawing’s sake. This is one of the results. In that zone, I doodle a lot of concept sketches for characters in my book, other books I want to do someday, and just general non sequitur stuff. This one took me aback– I really like the general direction my style was taking me here. Fuuuunnnnnnn…

I wish I could color. I’m glad I waited to learn, though– I couldn’t have taken in the information with an eye for critical detail until somewhat recently. With that in mind, in the next couple months, I’d like to dive in and start learning the trade. There are plenty of master colorists nearby and on the interwebs that I know, so that’d be cool to take in some wisdom.
I frequent several sketch blog sites during the work day, and oftentimes the image thumbnails are a LOT smaller than what I usually post. Would you prefer smaller thumbnails or what they currently are while browsing the blog? Honestly, it doesn’t matter to me, but I thought I’d ask.

It shouldn’t be any surprise to anyone at this point that I adore THE LEGEND OF ZELDA video game series by Nintendo. I’ve played most of the games in the series ever made, and my wife has played and FINISHED 85 percent of them, having only not played Ocarina of Time (yeah, I know) and the Game Boy Advance games. I will always sketch Link, Zelda, Tingle, and the crew– and I’m not hard-set against any set style of the game either, so anyone that hates WINDWAKER needs to step back. I LOVE that game. It was a brilliant experiment into the gameplay dynamic and its style was deceptively simple and WORKED for it. Amazing.

I’m really, really close to finishing the first SKYWARD, and it’s getting more and more real to me now. So many setbacks and so many deals fallen through on this thing that it’s heartbreaking. Honestly, it’d be great to hear some good news right about now about it. It’s still coming out regardless, folks– I’m committed to drawing at least a set number of issues of it so I can get part of it out of my system.
I believe in this series, and in creator-owned properties in general, so I’ll hold out as long as I can on this and I promise you my best on this one.

I keep thinking about the ARCHIE series out there lately– why it hasn’t caught on more with the mainstream comics audience, why the redesigned “comic-y” style change was a farce at best, and what kind of style COULD work on it. Well, I doodled this up really quick while reading a rant by Chris Sims about it. It’s not exactly what I want from it, but it’s a SKETCH, that’s the point– if it were fully finished idea, it wouldn’t be a sketch.

Don’t know if you noticed, but I offered a FREE SKETCH yesterday! That little banner above is more than random thoughts– thought that might take a few of you off-guard.
So which new comic-related movie are you looking forward to most this summer? With Thor, Green Lantern, Captain America, and more, it’s certainly going to be a slaughterfest this summer.I’m really digging what I’m seeing of the CAPTAIN AMERICA movie, personally– and by the director of THE ROCKETEER? Sure, I’m there.

Often, when I’m sketching, it’s at the studio drawing table, with small stacks of scrap paper crammed with sketches shoved under my computer’s keyboard until I can get them scanned or discarded. I’ll typically sketch on the same sheet of paper until it’s more or less filled to the edges, then pull out another fresh sheet to violate. This Firestar-centric page is an example of that– it must have spent a couple months under my keyboard until I got around to getting ‘er scanned. Heh– I sure could use an assistant for the grunt work, I tells ya.
