AS LONG AS YOU ARE BUYING SKYWARD #ZERO, THOUGH, ALL’S GREAT.  In the latest news from and featuring lil’ ol’ me, Newsarama just featured SKYWARD and DOUBLE FEATURE COMICS in a news story about their recent deal to go with Graphic.ly as its digital distributor as well as the Double Feature iPad app of all things awesome in digital comics!

Not counting yesterday, it’s been awhile since I’ve posted multiple-image Skratchadays, so I thought with all these Free Comic Book Day images on hand, why not?!

A little bit of everything here, from mutants to busty kittens to women torn between a ninja and Nick Fury’s son. Digest those little trivia pieces for a sec.

Okay, yeah– hope you dig them! The owners seemed to. Hard to tell when the sun is screaming down at you, y’know? hehehe

On with the sketch!

I did probably 25 or so sketches on Free Comic Book Day for the fans, and I gotta say: I wish I could have done more! I hate when people walk away empty-handed, but even the dozen or so artists there at this year’s event at Acme Comics could only draw so much (and when there were at least 2 or 3 other guys that did over THIRTY? yeah)… so at 3:45 or so, they closed the sketch lines, leaving 2-5 sketches per artist to finish before 5.

I cranked these out, but at the end? Yeah, my wrist was wrecked. I was the last man sketching (I was still with the fans as they took down the tent they had us in outside the shop), and I hope those that DID get a sketch from me are pleased with what they got. Hopefully!

On with the sketch!

I was stunned that people wanted SKYWARD-related sketches at Free Comic Book Day this year! Mind you, I DID have copies on-hand of the GRAPHITE EDITION #1 and all the original art as well, but consider me surprised.

In fact, the gentleman that requested this sketch also purchased a page of original art from the series! I had the chance to try out my new CUBE for the iPhone, a handy little credit card reader for my cell phone that lets me take credit card payments anywhere I am. QUITE handy at signings and conventions like last weekend’s FCBD!

I also drew a Quinn, a Slog-Rider, and a Jack the dog for other fans. Glad the characters are appealing to the readers!

Note: This is also my favorite sketch of Free Comic Book Day. I just like the grace of how I rendered her. Lots of fun.

I dig the Wolverine in the brown and tan– call me old-fashioned, but it best represented the ferocity of the character. In my mind, anyway. All the stripes, seams, and slices in his current look kind of look silly to me. He’s not the kind of guy that would wear much of a uniform anyway, but when he does? I think he’d pick something that gets the message across fast, not something designed to show what he DOES, really, y’know? Maybe it’s just me.

Well, I thought the scene was a classic, anyway– not every day you’re startled to hear your favorite characters curse seven time in 3 minutes when you’re ten years old– well, not a property like the Turtles, anyway.

I’d been reading the Mirage book since it first came out, but was more prepared to see something more akin to what the cartoon and the Archie books had been presenting, so that was a shock.

Also, the accents. Wasn’t quite ready for that. hehehe

Yeah– I took that photo. I was dropping off Jermaine Exum, who runs ACME COMICS, after seeing THOR earlier that night– when we saw guys camping out for the Free Comic Book Day even the next day! Spectacular!

JEFFERSON CITY, MO. — Students at Thomas Jefferson Middle School had a rare opportunity Friday.

The sixth-grade class in Jefferson City used 21st-century technology to learn more about an artist in Atlanta.

Desks, walls, and pictures, they all make up Ms. DeFeo’s classroom.  The children got an extra treat when they took a virtual field trip in their very own classroom.

Tim Campbell is a 6th-grade student in the social studies classroom at Thomas Jefferson Middle School.

“We got to talk to a guy all the way in Atlanta,” Ms. DeFeo’s 6th grade social studies student Tim Campbell said.

The guy Tim referred to is Jeremy Dale, an artist.

Dale answered questions from Ms. DeFeo’s 26 students through Skype.

“I think they got a lot out of it because it wasn’t just me telling them oh yeah, you can do this,” Jeni DeFeo said.  “This is a real life experience.  Jeremy is a person who does this job and it gives them a whole new lease on, wow this could be something that I could do.”

Students wrote down questions they wanted to ask dale and one by one they got the chance to sit in front of the computer and ask away.

Defeo said technology has a huge role in her classroom.

“Technology changes my classroom everyday and everyday it gets bigger and better,” DeFeo said.  “I use it a lot, things like Google Earth, I use music all the time, we do things like podcasts and videos and it really engages the kids.  They’re really into it, it gives them an opportunity to open up doors and maybe talk to people the might not ever get a chance to talk to before.  It’s just an opportunity to take your classroom and open it up to a global perspective.”

“It teaches us a whole new thing about comics and a new lesson about books and stuff,” Campbell said.

Mrs. Defeo’s students got to enjoy some of the 21st technology, it’s technology they’ll be using for years to come.

“This is their life, this is the way communication’s going to work for the 21st century, is that you may be in Jefferson City, Missouri but you can talk to Canada, you can talk to Atlanta, you can see what’s going on there,” DeFeo said.  “It’s teaching kids that there are these opportunities out there and allowing them to explore them in a safe environment.”

DeFeo hopes to set up more Skype sessions for her students soon.
