BUY my new series SKYWARD #1 today!
Congrats to several pairs of friends on their upcoming babies! It must be the season for that sort of announcement.
I’d name the happy couples by name, but there’s several that are holding the information back for now.
CONGRATULATIONS!

Every now and then, I get someone that shows up at my table at a convention that just wants to talk about what they’re doing artwise. Not professionals, not even amateur status illustrators… typically, it’s guys that “did art in high school” and “haven’t drawn in 11 years” and “can’t understand why Marvel and DC don’t hire guys that only do paintings on vans of dragons and nekkid ladies” and the like. True story. This sort of individual tends to come back to the table several times over the course of the weekend.
It’s cool, I love hearing people’s stories, but it can become draining after a while. Just one of the hazards of the job!

Apologies for not posting this earlier in the morning– I slept in a bit, which was amaaaaaazing. hehehe The past three weeks of doing shows and working triple-time on a secret project on a “tighter-than-tight” deadline have left me completely exhausted in every way.
Thanks to all the fans for coming out and seeing me at Dragon*Con! Several blog commenting regulars and many more besides helped make this quite possibly the best show I’ve ever done. I haven’t run all the numbers yet, but if the level of activity I had at the table and the # of con sketches and commissions I did are any indication, it ruled.
Also, thanks to Peter David for being a great table-buddy– we had lots of fun. Thom Zahler, my letterer on SKYWARD and who also stayed with us all weekend? What a gent. Nothing but praise.
I also have to give a huge “Woo-Hoo” to those close friends of mine who may or may not have dressed as the characters from ARCHER and won a spontaneous costume contest Sunday night thrown by the series own creators! Wowza.
Watch my Facebook tonight or so for the photos we took at Dragon this year (and the annual Dragon parade– always a fun time).

Jean Grey as Phoenix! Always liked that she didn’t wear a mask. In the past two weeks, I think I’ve drawn her three or four times for fans at shows– in all generations of her uniform. Bizarre, too– I rarely if ever get a Jean Grey request.

Back from Baltimore Comicon, and we leave for Fan-Expo TOMORROW. Clearly, this is insane.
Nevertheless, I’ll be at Fan-Expo Canada in Toronto this weekend– I THINK I have enough stuff scanned to keep the blog updating daily through the trip, so no down time!

I’ve been fascinated by the LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES ever since I was a kid, but beyond picking up a few issues here and there whenever a new creative team interested me, I didn’t get really into it until Jim Shooter and Francis Manapul’s run on the series a few years back. Good friend Sanford Greene also did some fill-in issues during that storyline as well. The redesigns were fresh and interesting, Manapul was clearly on the rise as an artist to watch (and I’m glad I started there– his FLASH run has been stellar)., and the plots were great looks into interpersonal relationships and politics (the former of the two I study at great length). I couldn’t get enough!
THEN THEY CANCELLED THE LEGION RUN MID-STORYLINE to facilitate another relaunch of the concept, this time with Paul Levitz. I’ll be honest: I dropped the book like a rock and haven’t been back since.
Can I also note a personal pet peeve of mine? I hate HATE hate when an artist draws a group of teenagers like they’re 30-somethings. Let’s just say that’s been the case with a couple of the illustrators on the book since Manapul was on it. Not cool, DC.
Anyway, here’s Colossal Boy and Timberwolf from the LEGION! Enjoy.

It does! Some of the biggest news out of San Diego this year, too– I was there in the panel as they unveiled it. Very exciting stuff.

One of my favorite pieces I’ve done live at a convention– this Magik piece at 11 x 17 inches is right up there among my all-time favorites of my own stuff. It was also the first time I’d ever used Copic markers on a commission before, really– if I remember correctly. The subject matter isn’t something I’m typically known for (I think), but it turned out pretty well, if I do say so myself.
