We really don’t. Or, rather, we’re not supposed to. Depends on who you are as well, I guess. :/
Doesn’t it? What’s the last career-defining art run? JRjr anytime he’s on, but he’s had several by this point on Spidey. ‘Ringo’s run was crippled by company storyline politics, then turned away from what it was originally hyped to be– and once Mike was able to draw Spidey in his classic outfit, it was in a barely-mentioned miniseries with the Fantastic Four… which ended up being his last book.
Okay, now I’m depressed about Mike again. Let’s get back on subject…
… Now, I’m not knocking the stories. In fact, I think Mark Waid and ESPECIALLY Dan Slott have turned in some of the best Spider-Man stories ever in the post “Brand New Cop-Out Day ” issues. Dan’s on FIRE, in fact. Well worth reading.
But art? He’s had some great artists during that time, to be sure… but given the alarming frequency of artistic change-ups (which was designed that way, I know), no one has had a stunning turnaround into greatness.
I keep hoping Ryan Stegman will get a good shot– he does great work, and his She-Hulks miniseries was stellar. Interesting sidenote: we both made the Marvel call-backs at the same time a few years back. However, I was stuck in a contract with Hasbro and couldn’t commit to a Marvel book at the time– Ryan, on the other hand, has gone on to become one of their rising stars! I’m thrilled for him.
